Boys Rancher Brings Home the Gold!
May 17, 2010

LaQuan, a Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch High School student, won a gold medal in the 1A shot put competition at the Texas State Track and Field Finals held in Austin, on May 14.

LaQuan threw his winning toss of 55-51/4, stripping the state champion title from Caleb Berry of Canadian.

“I missed my personal best by about an inch,” LaQuan told the Amarillo Globe-News in an interview, “but that’s OK…having this (the gold medal around his neck) is a good feeling.”

LaQuan also recently set a new Boys Ranch record in the shot put with a throw of 55-6. The old record was 54-2.5, set in 1983.

Way to go LaQuan!

Farley-Harriman Receive Pioneer Spirit Award
April 27, 2010

Genie Farley Harriman (Cal Farley’s daughter) and her husband, Sherman Harriman, received the 2010 Pioneer Spirit Award!

The couple was honored at a special dinner event at Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) in Canyon, TX.

“The Pioneer Spirit award recognizes individuals who exemplify the pioneer character by preserving the past for future generations and working to assure a better future for their fellow citizens of the Panhandle and the state of Texas,” according to a PPHM press release.

The Harrimans have tirelessly contributed to the wellbeing of the Texas Panhandle for more than 60 years. At the PPHM, the annual doll house display — the houses and miniature contents — all are crafted by the Harrimans. They also have supported the Museum in countless other ways over the years.

The pair has always been involved in the inner-workings of Cal Farley’s and continues to attend most of the children’s annual events, as well as the organization’s monthly Board of Directors meetings. They host an annual field trip for the Boys Ranch 7th grade class and Genie always is on stage to hug each senior as they walk across to receive their diplomas each May. Every Christmas season the Harrimans work for several weeks in the Cal Farley’s Town Office opening the mail from our beloved donors and friends.

Remembering Mr. Farley

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the passing of Cal Farley, our organization’s founder. To honor him, each year the flags at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch are flown at half mast. The flags will remain at half mast until Monday.

Cal Farley founded Boys Ranch in 1939 with the original intention to help America’s boys have a safe place to live, eat, learn and grow. Since its inception, over 9,000 boys and girls have been given a “Shirttail to Hang Onto.”

Donor Highlight

For 8 years, Delores has been opening mail each month that was sent by an unknown donor from somewhere in Florida. “Grandma S” has been sending a $25 check inside a crafty and thoughtful handmade card each and every month. She creates each card in such a way that it reflects the holiday of the month or perhaps the season. This one highlights the beauty of Fall.

Grandma S has two cats, Tish and Nemo, too.

Thank you, Grandma S!

Renewing the Past

Mike Pacino, Assistant Administrator of Campus Operations at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, has been working to located some grant monies to finance the replacement of three headstones that were in the Boot Hill Cemetery, located on Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch land. The replica headstones mark the graves of the Texas Rangers (trained by Pat Garret) who were killed in a gunfight at the Dunn & Jenkins Saloon at 1:30 a.m. on March 31, 1886.

To the right is a photo of the headstones from around 1936 and 1949. It is believed that they were stolen after the bridge was constructed over the Canadian River in 1955 and the roads were paved to Amarillo in 1958. The gentleman who makes the headstones for the Boys Ranch Cemetery has agreed to design the replicas with the intent of using concrete that looks like old sandstone to replicate the three original headstones.

The original headstones read:

FRANK VALLEY
